Dutch Pancakes Aruba

If you’re searching for the ultimate Dutch pancake recipe, look no further. Dutch pancakes, known as pannenkoeken, are a beloved dish in Aruba and the Netherlands. This delicious treat is perfect for breakfast, brunch, or even dinner.

Unlike the thick, fluffy American pancakes, Dutch pancakes are larger, thinner, and can be enjoyed with either sweet or savory toppings. You can find them throughout Aruba at one of the many traditional pannekoekenhuis.

In this article, we’ll share one of the best Dutch pancakes recipes, including tips for making it perfect every time.

What Makes Dutch Pancakes Special?

The recipe for Dutch pancakes sets them apart from American pancakes due to their size, texture, and versatility. Dutch pancakes are a thin, crepe-like dish typically spanning a foot in diameter, cooked in a large frying pan. Unlike crepes, Dutch pancakes can incorporate toppings directly into the batter as it cooks.

Traditional Dutch pancake recipes are perfect for those who love variety in their toppings. You can serve them with syrup and powdered sugar for a classic sweet treat or with savory ingredients like cheese and bacon for something heartier. This makes them perfect for breakfast or dinner (in my humble opinion)!

The Best Dutch Pancake Recipe

This recipe for a Dutch pancake is a must-try if you want a simple yet delicious dish that can be served for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Best of all? It’s made with basic ingredients you likely already have in your kitchen and requires just a few easy steps.

Ingredients

  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups of milk
  • 2 cups of flour
  • 2 pinches of salt
  • Optional: 2 tbsp of sugar for sweet pancakes

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Batter
In a large pouring bowl, beat the eggs. Add the milk and whisk together. Slowly add the flour and salt, mixing until the batter is smooth but slightly lumpy. For sweet pancakes, mix in sugar. Let the batter rest in the fridge while preparing toppings.

Step 2: Prepare the Toppings
Slice fruits, shred cheese, fry bacon, or sauté vegetables. Having your toppings ready is essential for quick assembly and hot, fresh pannekoeken.

Step 3: Cook the Pancakes
Heat a 12″ nonstick frying pan over medium heat and melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Pour about 1 cup of batter into the pan, tilting it to spread evenly.

Step 4: Add the Toppings
Place your chosen toppings (e.g., ham, onions, apples) on the pancake while the batter is still wet. Alternatively, you can cook the pancake and then add the toppings on the end but the flavors will not mix as much.

Step 5: Cook and Flip
Cook for 3-5 minutes until bubbles appear and the edges are golden. Gently flip the pancake and cook for another 3 minutes.

Optional: If using cheese, flip the pancake again, sprinkle cheese on top, and let it melt on low heat.

Step 6: Serve
Slide the pancake onto a plate and add any additional toppings, such as powdered sugar, syrup, or fresh fruit.
