How windy is Aruba?

Aruba experiences consistent trade winds year-round, with average wind speeds ranging from 20 to 25 miles per hour. These winds blow predominantly from the east and northeast, creating a refreshing breeze that offers respite from the tropical heat.

During certain times of the year, particularly from May to August, the winds can be even stronger. We’re talking occasionally reaching speeds of up to 30 miles per hour or more!

Why is Aruba windy?

Aruba’s consistent winds are primarily due to its location and the trade winds. Let’s take a closer look at the factors that contribute to the steady speed of the wind in Aruba.

  • Trade Winds: The island of Aruba lies within the Atlantic trade wind belt. These winds, which blow from the east and northeast, are a result of the Earth’s rotation and the uneven heating of the planet’s surface. The trade winds are a reliable and defining feature of the region’s climate.
  • Geographical Position: As you may know, Aruba is situated outside the hurricane belt and near the equator, where the trade winds are strongest. This location ensures that the island benefits from these cooling breezes almost year-round. You can learn more about Aruba’s location here.
  • Topography: Lastly, the flat terrain of Aruba, with its low-lying landscape, means there are few natural barriers to block the wind. This allows the breeze to flow freely across the island which contributes to its consistent windy conditions.

Seasonal Winds in Aruba

The intensity of Aruba’s winds varies throughout the year, with certain months experiencing stronger winds than others. Here’s a detailed look at when the Aruba winds are most and least intense.

May to August: Peak Wind Season

From May to August, the Aruba trade winds are at their strongest. In fact, they often reach speeds of up to 30 miles per hour or more! This period is particularly popular among windsurfing, kitesurfing, and sailing enthusiasts due to the optimal conditions. The winds are not only strong but also very consistent with the direction they blow – from the east and northeast.

September to November: Calmer Winds

From September to November, the winds in Aruba tend to be less intense, with average speeds typically dropping to around 15 to 20 miles per hour. This is considered the calmest period in Aruba. Although the winds are milder, they still provide a refreshing breeze, which also happens to coincide with the off-peak tourist season!

December to April: Consistent Wind

The rest of the year, December to April, sees steady wind speeds that are moderate, averaging between 20 to 25 miles per hour. While not as intense as the peak season, the winds are still strong enough to offer great conditions for water sports and outdoor activities.

How to Cope with Aruba Winds

You have no idea how many times I’ve had visitors check the weather in Aruba for their fast approaching trip just to be disappointed by the forecasted rainy and windy conditions. Should they still go? Well, the answer is of course a resounding YES!

The climate in Aruba is actually pretty predictable. You may see a quick shower of rain daily, but it rarely rains all day, and the wind is present year round, every day really. If you want to avoid the wind in Aruba, you’ll want to visit between September and November in hopes of hitting calmer winds. Even still, you’ll be greeted by some wind. So how does the wind in Aruba shape the island for visitors?

Enjoy the Wind’s Impact on the Weather

Aruba is a warm destination year round due to its proximity to the equator. However, the steady winds in Aruba provide a natural air conditioning system. This keeps the island’s temperatures pleasantly cool throughout the year. You’ll find it makes lounging on the beach or exploring the island’s outdoor attractions much more comfortable.

Additionally, the constant breeze in Aruba can make the hot sun feel less intense. This is great for spending the whole day out in the sun, but remember it’s still essential to wear reef-safe sunscreen to protect your skin from UV rays. You’re likely to get burnt even if the sun doesn’t feel too hot.

Take Advantage of Windy Water Sports

Aruba is a premier destination for windsurfing, kitesurfing, and sailing. The consistent and reliable winds create perfect conditions for these sports. In fact, you’ll find many windsurfers and kitesurfers hang out at spots like Hadicurari Beach (at the Fisherman’s Huts) and Boca Grandi. For sailors, you can enjoy small catamarans or larger yachts as the best vessels to explore the coastline and nearby islands.

Be Wise about Wind at the Beach in Aruba

On windier days, the sand can be whipped up and about the beach. This can be quite uncomfortable for beachgoers as it is really like free full body exfoliation. To enjoy the beach on a windy day, position yourself strategically away from the wind or use windbreaks to mitigate the wind.

Additionally, be aware of whatever kind of umbrella or tent you plan on using at the beach on windy days in Aruba. Some may not fare as well against 3o mile per hour winds!

Lastly, if you’re planning to swim, be aware that the wind can generate strong currents and waves. On particularly windy days, it’s a good idea to swim in designated areas where lifeguards are present or even stick to the pool if you’re not a competent swimmer!

Plan Lots of Outdoor Activities and Dining

With constant trade winds in Aruba, outdoor activities should be at the top of your list of things to do in Aruba! These persistent winds keep the temperature enjoyable, whether you’re hiking through Arikok National Park or strolling through Oranjestad.

Similarly, many of Aruba’s restaurants offer outdoor seating to take advantage of the beautiful weather. The wind can enhance this experience by providing a cool breeze on otherwise hot days. Make sure to secure loose items and opt for heavier table settings to avoid being a victim of the wind.

That’s right, the wind in Aruba can be aggressive and wonderful all at the same time! So is it always windy in Aruba? Pretty much… Just learn to embrace it, as it’s going to be there waiting for you!
