What is the Conchi Natural Pool?

The Conchi Natural Pool, Aruba, also known as “The Natural Pool”, is one of the most stunning natural formations on the island. Volcanic rock creates a circular barrier to the open sea, sheltering a pool of water from the wild waves of the Caribbean. This area has been nicknamed Conchi for “bowl” due to its shape.

This secluded spot is a popular destination but hard to reach as it is deep inside the Arikok National Park in Aruba with no paved roads leading to it. While it may be hard to understand its appeal right now, once you arrive, you’ll understand as the water is so clear that you can see fish swimming right below the surface.

Don’t be fooled though—this pool is surrounded by some of Aruba’s most rugged and dramatic terrain. This makes getting to Conchi Natural Pool in Aruba an adventure in itself.

Entrance Fees: To enter Arikok National Park, there is a fee of $20 per adult; Children under 17 are free.

What to Expect at the Natural Pool

Arriving at Conchi is the challenge, but even the final approach to the pool involves descending about 97 step. This makes wearing appropriate footwear critical. Sport shoes like Tevas or sturdy water shoes are recommended, as the rocks around the pool can be slippery and sharp.

Once you’ve made it to the pool, you’ll find yourself in one of the most amazing spots on the island. The secluded location, combined with the sound of waves crashing against the rocks, creates a peaceful and almost surreal atmosphere.

The pool itself is perfect for a refreshing dip, especially after the challenging journey to get there. During high tide, you can witness dramatic shows of water spraying over the rocks as the ocean waves crash into the shore. It’s a breathtaking sight that makes for a memorable experience.

Tips for Conchi Natural Pool

Now that you know all about the Natural Pool and what to expect, I wanted to bring just a few tips to the forefront.

  • Safety First: While swimming in the natural pool is generally safe, be cautious of slippery rocks and the occasional stronger wave that might splash over the edge. If the weather is rough, you may have to skip swimming in the pool. Always stay aware of the risks the water brings. In some areas, it is as deep as 17 feet. Do not get in if you do not know how to swim.
  • Amenities: Small snacks and drinks are often available at the top of the stairs leading to the pool, but it’s a good idea to bring your own refreshments, especially if you plan to stay for a while. There are no bathrooms on site, but you will find them at the Arikok Visitor Center.
  • Best Time to Visit: The pool can get crowded, especially during peak tourist seasons. To enjoy a quieter experience, consider visiting early in the morning or later in the afternoon. This will help you miss the tours.

Reaching the Conchi Natural Pool is an adventure in itself. Tucked away in the remote corners of Arikok National Park, this natural wonder is difficult to get to – accessible only by off-road vehicles, horseback, a challenging hike, or joining a tour. The journey can be tough, but the destination is truly worth the effort.

Here’s a detailed look at your options for getting there.

The most popular and practical way to reach Conchi is by driving a 4×4 vehicle, like an ATV or a jeep. The terrain within Arikok National Park is rugged, with rocky paths, steep inclines, and narrow trails that wind through the arid land.

If you’re an experienced driver comfortable with off-road conditions, renting a 4×4 – either an ATV, UTV or Jeep, gives you the freedom to explore the park at your own pace. For those less familiar with off-road driving, joining a Jeep Safari tour is highly recommended.

These guided tours are led by knowledgeable guides who not only handle the tricky driving but also provide insights into the park and its history. The tours typically also include other highlights within the park, making them a convenient way to get the most out of Arikok National Park.

  • Starting Time: Go early in the day to avoid the full sun and heat. You’ll also arrive at the pool before the tours arrive adding to the magic.
  • Sun Protection: Pack more water than you expect you’ll need. I recommend taking about 3 liters per person due to the hot sun. I also recommend wearing a hat and sunscreen. Make sure to reapply your sunscreen after you get out of the pool before you hike back!
  • Navigation: Your cell reception may waiver while you hike. While most of the trails are well marked, you do not want to get lost out there. Download an offline map from Google Maps or Maps.me.
